Job Title: Director of Music
Position Type: Part time (20-25 hours per week)
Reports to: Pastor
Direct Reports: None
Primary Objective: To plan and coordinate the music program at Saint Joseph Hill Church in order to facilitate the full and active participation of the assembly in the liturgical life of the church.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
With the guidance of the Pastor, and in coordination with the Liturgy Committee, participates in the planning and preparation of liturgical celebrations.
Selects music for all liturgies and prepares the requisite materials
- Schedules musicians, cantors, and choirs for liturgies including weddings and funerals as needed.
- Appoints appropriate volunteer assistants and /or group leaders
- Obtains, prepares and maintains music for liturgies
- Responsible for three (3) liturgies each weekend. (refer to hours and benefits).
Organizes, recruits and trains the parish music groups, cantors and musicians, and schedules and conducts rehearsals.
Works with the Pastor and Liturgy Committee to produce and maintain Parish Liturgical Music Guidelines.
Learns about the people in the parish and community. Plans music reponsively and approprately to parish needs and traditions.
Provides consultation, performance and information for engaged couples, bereaved families as needed, for the planning of music for weddings and funerals according to parish guidelines. compensation for these events is in addition to salary and per parish guidelines.
Maintains professional competence through regular music practice and continuing professional development.
Attends Staff and Liturgy Committee meetings.
With the Liturgy Committee, assists in preparaiton of the annual budget for music, and is accountable for all music expenditures.
Cares and maintains all music resources, including investigation, recommendation & supplementation to hymnals, researching and introducing the parish to new repertoire.
Abides by all policies and procedures as defined by St. Joe Hill and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as deemed necessary.
Qualifications
Preferred:
- A Bachelors Degree in Music
- Practicing Catholic
Required:
- Knowledge and appreciation of the Roman Catholic Liturgy
- Proficiency in voice and pipe organ
- Ability to coordinate accompaniment with other instruments
- Ability to direct and provide vocal instruction to choirs, cantors and congregationla singing
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills required
- Ability to work with volunteers and committees
- Computer Literacy
